52 Chicago Dogs — Slim’s
The beauty of this adventure is getting out and trying new places. So far, I’ve visited two of my favorite neighborhood spots, but yesterday I decided to stop at another local place I’ve passed plenty of times and never actually tried.
I now have a new favorite.
Slim’s isn’t a traditional hot dog stand. They serve hot dogs, but the menu is a little broader. Still, it’s a small place with limited seating, all the classics (gyro, burgers, dogs), and the dogs are every bit as good as what you’d find at a classic stand.
First things first: look at how beautiful those dogs are. These were, by far, the best-looking Chicago dogs I’ve had so far. And I think that matters. To me, a beautifully assembled dog suggests that somebody — in this case, the cook — took a little care and pride in putting it together. It wasn’t just about throwing everything on there and getting it out the door.
The fries weren’t my usual preference, but they were crispy and tasty, so no complaints.
And then there was the real bonus: Mr. Pibb. Winning!
I hadn’t even finished digesting lunch when I texted my wife that we needed to go back.
That’s a pretty good endorsement.
Three down. 49 Chicago dogs to go.
